Have you ever heard someone say, “Your self-worth determines your net worth”? It’s a popular phrase, but after advising successful individuals and families for more than 35 years, I’ve found it’s only part of the story. There are two critical components at play when it comes to your self-worth and net worth.
The first is what I call your Worth Barometer, which is a measure of your beliefs, self-esteem, and how you see yourself. The second is your Wealth Barometer, which reflects your relationship with money and your ability to accumulate and manage wealth.
You can be wealthy or broke and still have a low Worth Barometer. And while your Worth Barometer can impact your Wealth Barometer, they serve very different purposes. Your Wealth Barometer helps you accumulate and manage your money. Your Worth Barometer allows you to enjoy your wealth and the life you’ve created.
That distinction is important because accumulating more money doesn’t necessarily make you happier, more confident, or more fulfilled. You can reach every financial goal you set and still feel like you don’t have enough—or that you aren’t enough.
The ultimate goal is to elevate your Worth Barometer as you work toward your financial goals. That way, when you reach your desired financial destination, you have both the wealth you’ve worked hard to accumulate and the self-worth, confidence, and perspective to enjoy it.
Why Getting This is Critical
Many people assume that once they accumulate enough money, they’ll automatically feel successful, confident, or fulfilled. But that’s not always what happens.
I’ve worked with millionaires who privately believed they weren’t good enough. They successfully accumulated and managed wealth—their Wealth Barometer was working—but their low Worth Barometer made it difficult to fully enjoy what they had created.
I’ve also worked with incredibly kind, confident people who never became financially successful. A healthy Worth Barometer doesn’t automatically create a high Wealth Barometer. Self-worth and net worth aren’t the same thing, but they are connected. And ultimately, you want both.
Today, you’ll learn how to avoid these common challenges and strengthen both barometers so you can create a financially secure life you love.

The goal isn’t simply to become wealthy. It’s to elevate your Worth Barometer while building your Wealth Barometer so you can both create wealth and enjoy it.
When your Wealth Barometer allows you to effectively accumulate and manage your wealth—and your Worth Barometer allows you to appreciate what you’ve accomplished and enjoy the life you’ve created—the two are working together.
That’s when wealth becomes more than a number. It becomes a tool to help you create a financially secure life you truly love.
