Money and A Dopamine Hit – Ep8

Money and a Dopamine Hit

by: Annette Bau, CFP®

A “dopamine hit” refers to the release of the neurotransmitter dopamine in the brain, which occurs in response to pleasurable experiences. Dopamine is a chemical messenger that plays a role in the brain’s reward system.

It is known as the “feel-good hormone” and is associated with feelings of pleasure, motivation, and reinforcement.

A dopamine hit can occur in response to various pleasurable experiences. Examples include:

  • Eating your favorite food
  • Winning a game
  • Earning a bonus
  • Receiving a compliment
  • Sex, drugs, drinking, eating, to name a few

When dopamine is released in the brain, it creates a feeling of pleasure and reinforces the behavior that led to the release.

In some cases, pursuing behaviors that raise dopamine levels can become compulsive, leading to addiction. Addictive behaviors, such as substance abuse, over-earning, overspending, or overeating, can trigger a dopamine release in your brain.

Over time, levels of dopamine may drop. As a result, the individual may require increasing amounts of the behavior to achieve the same reward and good feeling. This can lead to a cycle of compulsive behavior and negative consequences.

This can create a positive feedback loop that encourages you to work harder and achieve even more.

Finding fulfilling work is an integral part of that. When you earn money, it can create a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction. Saving money and watching it grow can be satisfying. Financial stability can reduce stress and anxiety. Retirement Plan Checklist
