Highly successful people do things differently than others. One of the things they do better than most is asking excellent questions. Today, you’ll learn nine of the best questions I have heard over the last 35 years of advising successful people.
Before diving into the questions, I want to provide a little background.
I had the pleasure of speaking on the same stage as Stephen R. Covey. He authored the book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.
Initially, he was going to title the book The Seven Habits of Successful People. He didn’t because he was more focused and interested in people being highly effective than successful. And he felt most people equated success with money.
Individuals who develop habits of highly successful which we assume are effective too. People focus on success and money and often have more fulfilling lives.

9 Questions Highly Successful People Ask
Habits and Traits
Some of the most imperative daily habits, guiding principles, and traits of highly successful people:
- Create and adhere to a personal mission statement
- Apply habit 3 Put First Things First
- Create an environment that fosters trust
- Apply habit 7 to Sharpen the Saw
These are powerful and important principles, and I think so many times when we hear the word success, it’s instinctual to envision money, right? But that is only part of the equation.
Fulfilled and wealthy people do things differently.
They develop a skill set to achieve their goal. And can prioritize what’s important. For the majority, it’s fulfillment, physical and mental health, and wealth.
Before we dive into the questions, I’d like to share this advice I heard from Richard Branson, a billionaire. I believe it’s appropriate and applicable to effective and successful people. He said, “Listen deeply and always act with empathy.”
This is something we can all employ in our journey to live fulfilled.

The 9 Questions Highly Successful People Ask
In the podcast, we dive into nine questions.
Here is a sample:
#1. Why?
Begin by asking, “Why am I here?” Then, ask, “What am I supposed to achieve in my lifetime? Why do I matter, and how can I make the most impact?”
Mark Twain summed it up perfectly. He said that the two most important days of our lives are the day we’re born and the day we figure out why we’re born. To live fulfilled, you need to know your “why.”
Your why is your passion and purpose, whatever you can do to maximize personal fulfillment.
If you’re not clear on your why, I encourage you to complete the handwriting exercise from my book, The 7 Principles of Becoming a Fulfilled & Wealthy Millionaire. You can find it at the end of chapter one, in the section titled How to Release Mental Blocks and Core Beliefs.
If you want the entire process, click here.
On the podcast, I share the exact exercise.
#2. What do I really want?
Not kind of want, but really want.
We want to achieve a goal because of how we believe we will feel when we achieve it. And when you’re really clear on what you want, it’s easier to do the work to get there.
When we’re not clear on what we want, pebbles can come our way and deter us. But when we know what we want, a boulder could come in our path, and it doesn’t derail us.
When we don’t feel like doing what we need to do at the moment, but we are clear on what we want and the ultimate feeling we’re aiming for, it’s a lot easier to do the work.
#4. Will this action propel me closer to a fulfilled life?
It is important to ask this question constantly on your path to a more fulfilled life.
If you get a strong yes, then replicate the action.
But if the response is a no, try modifying your behavior or consider other avenues to propel yourself towards a fulfilled life; there’s no use trying the same action repeatedly, expecting different results.
It’s imperative to be honest with yourself since the only person who can determine your level of personal fulfillment is you.
What type of morning routine do I need to live fulfilled? Starting your day off right can do wonders to improve your physical and mental well-being.
This is why truly successful people are both personally fulfilled and wealthy. They envision what they want and consistently and continuously find pathways that bring them closer to achieving their goal.
#5. How can you use this task and save time
What can you do to complete the task at hand in as little time as possible? After all, time is money, and you wouldn’t be spending your money on frivolous items that don’t help you achieve your goals.
I’m a perfectionist, and as a financial planner and money manager, I need to be. That requires A+ work.
In reality, B-work in many areas is fine—above average.
The problem is that perfectionists want everything to be perfect instead of excellent. As a result, we often overwork ourselves, and the extra effort isn’t worth it in the long term.
#6. “What if I…?”
And then one of my favorite questions is, “What if I…?
1. Created a plan that allowed me to get clear on my big-picture goal and achieve financial freedom?
2. Consistently took action on my plan?
3. Completed this specific task?
4. Considered this?
Some of the what-ifs I’ve heard from fulfilled millionaires are fascinating.
Final Insight to Achieve Success
Commit yourself to do the work, whether it takes 30 minutes or 30 years.
As Stephen R Covey shared, “Seek first to understand then to be understood.”
In the book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, Covey argues that the secret of achieving your desired results lies in the habits of successful people, what they choose to do, and how they spend their time.
Bring activities that evoke joy and fulfillment towards the center of your life. If you do what you love, you’ll never work a day in your life.
